Writing Lab at Hilton Branch Library: Thursday, Oct. 17 from 4:30-6pm
Clinton parent and guest author, Laurie Tarken, will be the coach to help with writing in all subject areas. OR, just come in to do some creative writing of your own. IT’S FREE!!!

ADD Support Group:
The Parenting Center is sponsoring a monthly support group for parents of elementary and middle schoolers with attential difficulties. The first meeting will be held on October 30th at 7:30pm and will be led by Alison Steiner, LCSW. Please see the attached flyer for important information.

Free Family Concert: TYCOON DOG
This Sunday, Oct. 20, 3-5 pm, in Maplewood Memorial Park
The band Tycoon Dog (led by Clinton parents) will put on a free concert of songs and improv touching on rock, blues, reggae, funk, pop, soul and hillbilly country this Sunday from 3-5 pm in Memorial Park, on the hillside opposite the NJ Transit station. The music is positive and fun for folks of all ages, and this will be a great opportunity to celebrate outdoors with family, friends and neighbors before the weather turns cold. So please join us for an afternoon of sun, fun and music on the hillside! This event is sponsored by the Township of Maplewood.

Dr. Temple Grandin, autism advocate and bestselling author, will be speaking at Montclair State University on Thursday, September 26th.

Dr. Grandin will share details of her latest bestselling book, The Way I See It: A Personal Look at Autism and Asperger’s. Other bestselling publications include Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships,Animals Make Us Human, and Emergence: Labeled Autistic. She presently works as a Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University and speaks around the world on autism and cattle handling.

During her presentation, Dr. Grandin will share her story of how a mentor recognized her interests and abilities, despite being diagnosed with autism at a young age. Her fascinating life, with all its challenges and successes, has been captured in an HBO full-length film, Temple Grandin, starring Claire Danes, and has been featured on NPR and major television programs such as “The Today Show” and “Larry King Live”.

Dr. Grandin will speak in Memorial Auditorium beginning at 10 a.m. followed by a question & answer segment and a book signing beginning at 12 p.m.. The event is free. Doors will open to the public at 9:30 a.m. and admission and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

This program is sponsored by the College of Education and Human Services, the Center of Pedagogy, and the Center for Autism and Early Childhood Mental Health at Montclair State University, in partnership with the Newark Public Schools.

Crime Prevention Meeting:

Maplewood Police Department Detective Dean Naddeo is conducting a “Crime Prevention Meeting” on Thursday 10/3 at 7:30 PM in the Court Room adjacent to Maplewood Police Headquarters. They plan to discuss their recent efforts (perhaps including recently spotted neighborhood watch signs), provide tips for residents, and possibly help re-energize and expand the existing neighborhood watch networks.

Babygate: What You Really Need to Know About Pregnancy and Parenting in the American Workplace:
September 26, 7 pm – Maplewood Library

Come hear an informative talk by one of the authors of this important new book. This discussion will spotlight the protections expecting and new parents have (and don=92t have) in the workplace and explain how workers can advocate for themselves and protect their jobs and paychecks. The book was written and published by A Better Balance: The Work and Family Legal Center. Click here for additional information.
