The Big Read

Dear Families:

We hope you are enjoying your winter break, and taking some time to enjoy reading with your child. To welcome in BookFest–Clinton School’s own celebration of books in February 2013–we are happy to promote and participate in The Big Read. The Big Read is a district-wide community reading initiative led by Jefferson School parent volunteers Marietta Zacker and Patricia Canning that will focus on two primary school-level books. Over the coming weeks, we will encourage family discussion of the books via fun and thought-provoking email messages developed by the parent volunteers. The initiative ends on February 28th with The Big Celebration, an evening event at school to which families are invited to come and discuss the books and topics surrounding the books in a book club-like manner.

The books are The Empty Pot, (for grades K-2) by Demi and Out of My Mind, (for grades 3-5*)’ by Sharon Draper. Clinton School PTA has made copies of the book available to borrow from our school library, and our local Maplewood and South Orange libraries have multiple copies of the books on hand. They may also be purchased at a 10% discount from Sparkhouse in South Orange and Words Bookstore in Maplewood. Just mention the Big Read for the discount.

More information about The Big Read will be distributed after the holiday break. If you would like to participate in this initiative, please take this time to borrow or purchase the book(s) and read along with your child.

Though Out of My Mind has been recommended for grades 3-5 readers, we suggest that you might want to preview it; we know our children are ready for ‘big ideas’ at different ages.

Calling All Clinton Parents- Our Teachers Have a Request for Help

The following Clinton School teachers have made a request for special assistance during the holiday break and in early January!

Kirkland/Cudmore, Fleming/Leibowitz, Wasserman, Ross, LaConte, Frascella, Ceccacci/Leach, Marr, Wrembel, Drechsel, Pomares, Solas/Gordon, Mack/Mathew, Ruggiero, and Cutrufello…..if your child has one of these teachers, we hope you can help!

The task is simple, but will take a little time. The more people who help, the easier it will be!

Each of our classrooms contains a class library, lots of books that are used during the school year for lessons as well as for student independent reading. Our teachers need these books to be labeled according to the reading level they reflect in our district’s language arts program (it’s a number that helps students find that ‘just right’ book).

It works like this:

On Thursday or Friday of this week, at the end of the school day (remember that dismissal is 12:05 on Friday!) you offer to take a bag of books from your child’s teachers.

During the break, you follow the written directions provided by the teachers. All you need to do is to look up their titles on a website, and write the number on a sticker on the cover of the book.
The Clinton PTA provides you with the stickers; you use a nice dark blue or black ink.

The teacher will provide you with written instructions when you offer to take a bag of books home.

Then you return the books ASAP (ideally, when we return to school on January 2) since our children use them every day!

This volunteer effort will save our teachers hours and hours of work and help each and every one of our students be a better reader! Thank you, as always, for supporting the work our teachers do and the Clinton PTA.

Dates for Clinton All School Musical Have Changed!

Dates for the Clinton All-School Musical have changed!

Performance dates for the Clinton Student Theatre production of “NIGHT AT THE LIBRARY” have been moved up one weekend, to Friday, March 15th, and Saturday, March 16th. This change removes any conflict with the performance dates of the South Orange Middle School musical.

Scene and crew assignments, as well as rehearsal schedules, will be distributed to students on Thursday, December 20th. Rehearsals begin immediately after the Holiday Recess.

Monday’s Cookie Distribution was a big success!

If you brought items in containers and would like to pick them up, please do so before Thursday afternoon. Containers are located in the mailroom. All those left will be recycled.
